What is Local SEO? Everything You Need to Know
Can local SEO be used to elevate your website over that of big-branded companies? What is local SEO? In some respects, local SEO was created to help level the playing field. As you know, people receive Google search results based partially on their location, and thanks to local SEO, your company is more easily able to attract people who live near your business.
What is Local SEO?
Let’s say that you own a hair salon in a small town called “Berry.” If somebody types in “Hair Salon,” then they may receive results from all over the country. On the other hand, if they type in “Hair salon in Berry,” then the first results they see will be for hair salons in Berry. If your local SEO is optimized correctly, your hair salon will be listed near the top of the search engine results.
When somebody types in “hair salon,” your website may be result 450,000 on Google, but if they type in “Hair salon in Berry,” and your local SEO is all set up, then your website will be on the first page.
Obviously, if you live in a massive city, then your website may appear a little lower down the search engine results and will need an effective search campaign to rise up the rankings.
Location-Based Apps, Smartphones And Cookies
There are some occasions where the user doesn’t have to type in your town or your location to see your website in the first pages of the search engine results. Some smartphones and some apps will use your current location as per what it says on the phone or app. If your phone says you are in Berry, then it shows you results from Berry, even if all you typed in was “Hair Salon.” Google may also be able to determine your location using cookies or data it harvests from Google Chrome users.
How To Set Up Your Local SEO
It has become easier than ever since Google set up “Google My Business.” You sign up for a free Google account and you join the “Google My Business” program which is also free. All you need to do is provide your business address, business name, and a link to your website. However, it is also recommended that you give them extra details like your opening times and an image of the front of your building/business. Maybe add branding messages from your digital marketing plan.
Google users will also be able to give your business Google reviews, which appear on Google if somebody writes your business name into the search engine. Once you have signed up for Google My Business, you do not need to worry about any other types of local SEO. For example, you do not need to show your address on your website or add location-based keywords.
